Flexible Funding

Bottom-up initiatives arising from the research community are a key component of the network, with 40% (£500,000) of the Network funding being allocated to flexible funding calls. Taking the scientific evidence on biases in peer review into account, all flexible funding under the IGNITE Network+ has been awarded on the basis of double-blind peer review. The IGNITE Network+ offered two different types of flexible funding, both of which are outlined below.  All of the funding calls have now closed.

Flexible funding activity 1 (FA1) - Increasing the number of diverse PIs on UKRI grants

This activity is designed to directly address the low number of PIs applying from under-represented backgrounds to EPSRC’s Energy programme.

Flexible funding activity 2 (FA2) - EDI Challenges: Identifying barriers and designing disruptive initiatives

The energy research community were asked to suggest where data collection, support or interventions are particularly needed.   Projects (£1k-£20k) could be workshops, baseline data collection, where robust data does not exist, as well as in design, delivery and monitoring of disruptive interventions, dissemination activities and training events.
